The Melbourne Model

Our unique curriculum is designed to give you a wider understanding of the world beyond your degree. Before you come to Open Day, find out more about the Melbourne Model and how it will help you make a real impact on the world.

How does it work?

As Australia's leading university in the world's most liveable city, it's only fitting that we offer a world-class education model – the first of its kind in Australia. We call it the Melbourne Model.

You start with an undergraduate (bachelors) degree. Over three years you’ll develop a deep understanding of a particular study area – your major.

You’ll also study subjects from outside your core study area. We call this breadth. Not only will breadth provide you with a greater understanding of the world around you, it will allow you to tailor your course to fit your individual passions and career ambitions. You might, for example, study Science but take breadth in Mandarin Chinese – a great choice for a science fan looking to work internationally and help solve global issues. You can also simply explore something you’ve always been curious about.

Following your undergraduate degree, you can enter the workforce or progress to a specialised graduate degree. Graduate degrees offer advanced learning in professional fields such as law, engineering, medicine, architecture and teaching. You’ll earn a competitive, internationally-recognised qualification and the skills and knowledge required for expert professional practice.

Melbourne model

The Melbourne Model gives you a globally competitive edge. Here’s how:

1. Flexible or focused

You can focus on your chosen career from day one, or keep your options open and explore a range of subjects before deciding. If you change your mind along the way, that’s okay too – in many of our degrees it’s easy to pursue a new direction.

2. Internationally recognised

Designed to prepare you for a global career, the Melbourne Model is aligned with the top universities in Europe, the US and Asia. Many of our specialist graduate degrees are accredited for professional practice in Australia and overseas.

3. Outstanding employability

No Australian university is rated higher for employer reputation, and Melbourne ranks 11th among employers worldwide.* Each year more than 250 Australian and international organisations – including IBM, KPMG and PwC – visit campus to entice our students with graduate job opportunities.

4. Connected with the real world

The Melbourne Model connects you with your fellow students, the University community and the wider world through real-world experiences – think internships, fieldwork, research projects and overseas study. You’ll collaborate with peers from other degrees and 130 different countries, giving you the perspective and communication skills necessary for success in the global workplace.

5. Your own Melbourne experience

You’ll find your own place at Melbourne. Our students are happy students – we encourage you to follow your curiosity and study what you love, because that’s how you thrive. Melbourne has the highest course completion rates of any university in Australia.
